He began playing trumpet at 11 but didn’t consider music as a career until college. While studying for a business degree at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Duane joined the university’s jazz band. He jumpstarted himself into opportunities to play with jazz luminaries Stanley Turrentine, Shirley Scott, Charles Fambrough and Clark Terry. Duane studied jazz in master classes at Temple University with the legendary Dr. Billy Taylor. He was later tapped by the late pianist Mulgrew Miller to join his ensemble, Wingspan.

Beginning in the 1990s, he toured with the Tommy Flanagan Trio and he has played with the Bill Charlap Trio since the mid ‘90s. He was a founding member of the collective sextet One for All and is a visiting artist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, Washington played with The Blue Note 7, an all-star septet formed in honor of Blue Note Records’ 70th Anniversary.

The Jeff Hamilton Trio featuring Tamir Hendelman and John Hamar, has been a pillar of The Jazz Cruise for nearly two decades. For years, Jeff has served as the untitled co-producer of The Jazz Cruise aiding our staff with insights and ideas that have made The Jazz Cruise so special. Kevin has written scores for both TV movies and full-length independent feature films and he’s appeared on various TV shows from Hollywood Squares to Celebrity Family Feud (with his sister and two brothers!). He has taught at the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp, the Banff School and Rutgers University, as well as hosting master classes at many colleges and universities. In addition to concert touring, Kevin has begun presenting at conferences around the country not only as a musician but also as a motivational speaker to people of all ages.

You may do that on The Smooth Jazz Cruise, but you would be missing special interviews, Artist-Hosted Events, pool parties, lunch events, and, of course, great music. Daytime music shows may be presented in any of the music venues (Celebrity Theatre, Rendezvous Lounge or Sky Lounge). Special shows may also be seen and heard on the pool deck or in The Cosmopolitan Restaurant, the main dining room of the ship. Daytime music shows are presented on a first-come, first-served basis. Journey of Jazz ’25 arrives in San Francisco on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at 7 am (local) and departs on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at 6 pm (local). While in San Francisco, Journey of Jazz ’25 will present the customary amazing concerts and shows that Jazz Cruises has produced for 25 years. However, each day, guests will have several excursion or event options which they can reserve.
Featured in nearly 200 recordings – including 16 Grammy® Award-winning titles – with the likes of Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Mel Torme and Herb Ellis, Jeff also teaches, arranges, and composes for the drums. Mentored by legends such as Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown, Jeff in turn has been a teacher and inspiration to multiple generations of young musicians. Houston’s appearances as sideman are legion, and include recordings with Etta Jones, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Dakota Staton, Horace Silver, Charles Earland, Joey DeFrancesco, and many others. As a record producer, he has worked with many artists, including Etta Jones, Freddy Cole, Charles Brown, David ‘Fathead’ Newman, Dakota Staton, and Ernie Andrews. Robin Eubanks is one of the premier jazz trombonists of his generation.
Currently the Millennium Class ships of Celebrity Cruises provide us with the best opportunity to present our programs. Anchored by an amazing main theater (Celebrity Theatre), which seats more than half our guests at one time, those ships have significant additional performance venues (Sky Lounge, Rendezvous Lounge, Foyer, Pool Deck). And, as we saw upon our first inspection of the ships, there is an amazing bonus venue. With a little imagination, we convert the main dining room (The Cosmopolitan Restaurant) into a performance venue most afternoons and a gorgeous jazz cabaret every evening. Sold by Entertainment Cruise Productions, which also runs the Smooth Jazz Cruise and the Jazz Cruise, Blue Note at Sea is a comparatively cooler, bluesier kind of music theme cruise. Acts you'd find in a hip blues joint pepper the lineup, including a younger set of up-and-coming artists.
A live concert is being planned that will include both musicians sailing on Journey of Jazz ’25 and local talent. On most cruises, once the ship docks in port, guests are either free to make their own way for the hours docked or can elect to purchase various excursion options offered by the cruise line. Since 2001, The Jazz Cruise has set the standard for jazz entertainment at sea, and, in the minds of many has become the most significant “straight-ahead” jazz event in the world.
Our notable winery selections include Duckhorn, Brasswood Estate, Peju, Sequoia Grove and St. Supery. Our selected wineries are family-owned and operated, which means each winery visit will feel like home. Specifically, we will be taking our guests on a Journey from the early days of jazz through the modern era. Marcus Miller and Gregory Porter, two astute jazz aficionados, will be your guides all week. The other “journey” will be our return to the West Coast complete with a long list of privately curated and produced land-based excursions and events. Botti at Sea ’24 was the first sailing of this program, and, by all standards, it was a runaway hit.
Favorites set to perform on board include The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, Chubby Checker, The Coasters, Darlene Love and The Chantels. Highlights among the ship events range from a senior prom and a sock hop to game shows and karaoke. Daily bridge, presented by certified bridge coordinators, is offered daily. The Houston Person Dance Party is one of the great events of the Cruise.
